One of the most underreported and devastatingly significant legacies of the Cold War, the U.S., Russia, China and other nations (including those singled out as supporters of terrorism) stockpiling (and only recent, piecemeal, slow-as-molasses destruction of some of these stockpiles to continue for decade after decade in a priority that is ridiculously low on the national/international radar unfortunately) of tens of thousands of tons of offensive biological weapons represents another case of government/corporate negligence of a scale that boggles the mind.
The defense always given by Presidents, Congress, CDC, corporate sponsors/researchers and others is “but there’s never been a “major” accident “in this country” before. What planet are you from?! There, in fact, have been major accidents and significant numbers of deaths associated with these bio-toxins which HAVE OCCURRED in Russia (google Sverdlovsk, March 1980 for bio and Tomsk for nuclear waste tank explosion–note we’ve got millions of gallons of nuke toxic sludge at Hanford, Washington state and rad waste at EVERY N power plant in America) and in other nations. And the anthrax attack within weeks after 9/11 killed five and injured 17 in “God We Trust” America where we’re (mis)spending three-fourths of a trillion dollars annually on military and homeland security “defense”.
There are MANY other examples of accidents, incidents, misplaced data, misplaced toxins, that should spark GREAT CONCERN on the part of mainstream media, government watchdogs, and the public at large. Yet, it is understandable that mainstream media, which used to track nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons/toxins much more closely during the Cold War, is now more content to spend valuable national broadcast time on which Kardasian is dating which Hollywood jock, and how controversial the latest American Idol program was.
The defense that Level 4 facilities have never been penetrated by outsiders reminds one of the great admonition of pre-9/11 days that civilian airliners have never been used as weapons of mass destruction. The nuclear industry repeats this mantra often about the 104 U.S. nuclear power plants yet FBI Red Team exercises conducted (quietly) at nuclear plants many times over the decades illustrate that a small group of dedicated, fanatical and willing-to-die terrorists can survive in numbers significant enough to seize such a nuclear power plant or crash an airbus into it. Thereafter shutting down the cooling systems and turning the China Syndrome motion picture into a frightening true life documentary of Armageddon. The same, can no doubt, be said of Ft. Dedrick and other equivalents of Ft. Detricks in Russia, China, England, etc.
Instead of launching countless number of expensive drones with Hellfire missiles at Afghan buildings where terrorists are hiding (unfortunately also with old women and men, young children and babies which generates surviving new generations of anti-American, anti-NATO defenders of Islam and makes the “long war” even longer), let’s cut that way back and redirect some of our valuable treasure toward speeding up destruction of these toxins (not just on Johnston Island in the Pacific but in other remote areas, in concert with other powers, so that we minimize global impact of possible accidents or destruction snafus), closing down and cleaning up most of these facilities but only after we push hard for even stronger treaties (including the U.S. leading the way with some unilateral destruction of these toxins, chemicals and nuclear weapons) and verification regimes that shouldn’t take Congress a decade to rubber stamp. Build a biotoxin facility on Pa. Ave. in Wash, DC between the White House and Congress and that will speed Presidential/Congressional support to ship these things to their final destruction. We, the American People, need to pressure our legislators, President Obama, Sarah Palin, John Boehnert Ralph Nader, and others to have a National Town Meeting about NBC (Nuke, Bio, Chem) Toxins ,Their Dangerous Legacy, and How to Speed Their Destruction. We Want Action Now not an agenda for the far future as Obama’s rhetoric of getting rid of nuclear weapons reveals.
CDC and other agencies should work internationally with the U.N. to establish worldwide just a handful of facilities that stockpile ebola and deady diseases for study to improve antidotes, treatment, diagnosis, etc. The rest of the so-called “laboratories” (i.e., Boys with Bio Toys of Mass Destruction–Who Can Design the Best Bio Killer and Win Bio Boy Scout of America This Year?) should be shut down pronto.
But remember, don’t worry, be happy. Just turn on a cellphone sports app and forgit about it. Bio Toxins, who cares. Hey why is your skin filled with blotches and why are you gagging on that McDonald’s frappe, dude? I’m not feeling so good myself–Did you get that at the McDonald’s outside Ft.
